Academic Exchange | A Delegation of Top Bioelectromagnetics Experts Visits winonco to Guide New Breakthroughs in Minimally Invasive Tumor Ablation

2026-07-21

In July 2026, a number of authoritative experts from the Bioelectrotechnical Committee of the China Electrotechnical Society and the Bioelectromagnetics Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering visited Hangzhou winonco Medical Technology to observe and provide guidance, and held in-depth exchanges on frontier advances in bioelectromagnetics and the translation of minimally invasive tumor ablation technologies.

Authoritative bioelectromagnetics experts gather to witness a technological journey of persistence and collaboration

In the academic exchange symposium, Professor Yao Chenguo of Chongqing University, co-founder and chief scientist of winonco, first warmly introduced the visiting guest experts to the attending team, including: Professor Shang Peng of Northwestern Polytechnical University, Researcher Song Tao of the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Chen Guangdi of Zhejiang University, Professor Lu Mai of Lanzhou Jiaotong University, Professor Fu Feng of the Air Force Medical University, Researcher Liu Guoqiang of the Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Liu Dingxin of Xi’an Jiaotong University, Professor Cao Quanliang of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Researcher Chen Zhitong of the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Zhang Xiaotong of Zhejiang University, Professor Xu Zheng of Chongqing University, Professor Zhao Yajun of Nanjing Tech University, and others, covering authoritative experts across the entire field of bioelectromagnetics, including static magnetic fields, pulsed high magnetic fields, pulsed electric fields, electrical impedance tomography, and plasma medicine.

Professor Yao Chenguo sincerely thanked the experts for their long-term support and help to the team. He said that the pulsed electric field tumor ablation technology, from its initial proposal to technology translation and clinical implementation, and now to continuous innovation, has not been a smooth path; it is precisely thanks to the careful guidance of experts in the field and the long-term funding of the National Natural Science Foundation of China that the team has been able to come this far step by step.

“Engineering + Medicine + Clinical” trinity, forging a unique innovation model

The Chairman of winonco expressed a warm welcome to the experts and introduced the company’s founding vision and core philosophy. The Chairman said: "The founding of winonco stems from the translation of Professor Yao Chenguo’s technology: we are a very unique innovation combination that deeply integrates ‘engineering - biomedical science - clinical medicine.’

“It is precisely this unique model that enables us to produce product concepts and technical solutions that differ from those of other companies. We work deeply in the oncology field, using engineering and technical means to solve clinical bottleneck pain points, and are committed to creating solutions that are truly beneficial to patients in the long term, serving domestic clinical experts and patients, while also striving to bring our Chinese technology to the world and provide Chinese solutions to the world.”

Single-Needle Local Anesthesia and a 0-to-1 Breakthrough in Lung Cancer: Wknife’s Path of Technological Leaps

Subsequently, Dr. Liu Hongmei, Chief Innovation Officer of winonco, introduced in detail and demonstrated the technological evolution of the core product “Wknife”: conventional irreversible electroporation (IRE) requires general anesthesia, muscle relaxation, and multi-needle placement, with a high operating threshold; the new-generation S-IRE achieves “local anesthesia + single needle” ablation, which completely changes the technical approach of the traditional NanoKnife, greatly lowering the surgical threshold, providing an alternative innovative pathway for more patients, and helping accelerate the popularization of IRE technology.

At the same time, the team is working to advance clinical research on non-thermal selective ablation of the lung, achieving a 0-to-1 breakthrough in this subspecialty. Through the team’s joint efforts, the Wknife product has achieved remarkable results: it has obtained Class III medical device registration certificates for liver cancer and pancreatic cancer, has twice entered the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) innovative medical device review channel, has filed more than 200 patents in China and abroad, with principle-level core patents granted in China, the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and other regions, and its clinical application cases continue to accumulate.

In-Depth Expert Discussion: Non-Thermal Selectivity, Combination Therapy, and Prospects for Medical Applications

The attending experts spoke highly of the achievements made by winonco and held in-depth discussions on technical principles, underlying mechanisms, exploration of clinical indications, and clinical solutions.

The expert team pointed out that winonco is an excellent example of the medicine-engineering translation of bioelectromagnetic technology; it not only has core technical support, but has also built an innovative operating model combining biology, medicine, and engineering, forming a very unique corporate culture and core mission, and continues to focus on deep development in the oncology field.

Regarding the non-thermal selective characteristics exhibited by pulsed electric fields, the attending experts held in-depth exchanges; this characteristic of targeting cells while preserving important structures such as blood vessels and nerves has important advantages in special sites of the human body, including the ability to avoid damaging the patient’s urethra and nerve function in prostate diseases. They expressed the hope that the team would further accelerate the layout of other indications so that patients can benefit clinically as soon as possible.

The experts also highly praised the bipolar needle as well as the promoting effect of pulsed electric fields and their changes to the tumor microenvironment on the efficacy of combination therapy; in addition, some experts provided important guidance on signal monitoring and efficacy feedback assessment of pulsed electric fields, and gave important suggestions on electric field regulation and spatial distribution under pulsed electric fields, while further discussing the translation of plasma technology and prospects for medical applications.

Field Visit: Witnessing Frontline R&D and Production and the Corporate Spirit of “Making Good Vows”

After the academic exchange, the experts visited winonco’s electronics laboratory, electronics production workshop, and sterile production workshop up close, and observed the physical operation of irreversible electroporation-related equipment. The expert team highly praised Wknife’s innovative breakthroughs in “single-needle local anesthesia” and non-thermal ablation, and was deeply impressed by the company’s innovative philosophy and culture — “make good vows, do hard work, reach new heights” — always focusing on “minimally invasive tumor solutions” and practicing the original aspiration of integrating medicine and engineering to benefit patients.
